To prepare for Bangladesh's first-ever Boat Census-2026, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) hosted a district-level awareness seminar for maritime stakeholders at the Bhola Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Room on Sunday.

Scheduled nationwide from August 20 to 29, the census aims to build a comprehensive database of all engine-powered boats operating in the country’s marine, coastal, and inland waters. By establishing an accurate picture of the sector, the government seeks to enhance maritime safety, enforce better regulations, and improve the livelihoods of fishermen and boat workers.

Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Dr. Shamim Rahman attended as the chief guest emphasizing the critical role this data will play in national planning. Maksudur Rahman Deputy Director of the Bhola District Statistical Office delivered the keynote presentation outlining the operational framework.

Other notable speakers included Civil Surgeon Dr. Monirul Islam, Local Government Deputy Director Md. Belal Hossain and District Information Officer Md. Shah Abdur Rahim Nurannabi. The event saw active participation from the Naval Directorate, Naval Police Boat Owners’ and Workers’ Associations various government agencies and local journalists.

This pioneering census will create a verified statistical foundation for the country's extensive water transport and fishing networks.
