A young man named Selim took his own life by hanging after penning a letter to his wife, following a loss in online gambling. Monirul Islam, the In-charge of Pakshi Police Outpost, confirmed this incident on Friday, November 7.
The tragic event occurred on the night of Thursday, November 6, in the Pakshi Yuktiila area of Ishwardi upazila, Pabna. Selim, the deceased, was the son of Babu Hossain from Thanaikhada village in Baraigram upazila, Natore.
As per police and local reports, Selim had been residing in a rented accommodation in Pakshi Yuktiila with his wife Khadija and their three-year-old daughter Sabiha for approximately six months. Khadija was employed at a garment factory named IM BD located in Ishwardi EPZ. On the evening of the incident, Khadija returned home from work to discover Selim hanging from the ceiling, with a veil around his neck. Subsequently, the police retrieved the body and transported it to the morgue of Pabna General Hospital for an autopsy. During this time, a letter was found in the house, believed to have been written by Selim prior to his death.
In the letter, he expressed - "Dear Khadija, I have failed to uphold your expectations. I have committed a grave sin; please forgive me if you can. I no longer wish to live on this earth. I spoke to Abba for the last time, and they are well. You and our daughter are also well. Please take care of Sabiha and raise her to be a good person. That is all - your Selim. I regret not being able to see your face one last time. I love you, Khadija, and Sabiha. Abba-Amma, please forgive me as well. Khadija is not to blame. I am leaving due to my own mistakes."
It is widely recognized that Selim faced prolonged unemployment, which led to severe depression following numerous failures, including a struggle with online gambling addiction. This habit drained significant financial resources from his family. He was left mentally shattered by the ongoing disappointments of repeated losses and joblessness. Local residents claim that Selim took his own life as a result of his gambling addiction and the resulting financial difficulties.
Monirul Islam, the officer in charge of the Pakshi police outpost, stated, "After receiving the report, we recovered the body and transported it to the Pabna General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. An investigation into the incident is currently underway, and legal proceedings are being initiated regarding this matter."
