A mobile court fined two prominent transport companies a total of Tk 10,000 on Saturday for charging passengers excessive fares on Dhaka-bound buses from Bheramara.
The enforcement drive was conducted by Bheramara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Amirul Arafat at the local coach stand following complaints that transport operators were overcharging travelers ahead of the Eid festival. During the operation, the counters of SB Transport and Hanif Transport were each fined Tk 5,000 under the Road Transport Act. The authorities also issued strict warnings against future ticket price manipulation.
"There is absolutely no room for holding passengers hostage by demanding extra fares," UNO Amirul Arafat stated. "These monitoring drives will continue regularly to protect the public interest, prevent financial exploitation, and maintain discipline on our highways. Any transport operator found guilty of irregularities will face severe legal consequences."
Commuters welcomed the administrative action, noting that arbitrary fare hikes during festive seasons have long caused immense public suffering. They urged the local administration to maintain strict vigilance throughout the holiday rush.
