A burglary took place at the locked residence of former Union Parishad (UP) member Milan Mir in Baniakhali village under Morelganj Upazila late Friday night.
According to family members, the house in Ward 4 of Khaulia Union was completely empty at the time of the incident. Milan Mir’s wife, Salwa Akhter, was visiting her father’s home in neighboring Sharankhola Upazila for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha holidays. Meanwhile, Milan Mir has reportedly been living away from the village due to legal complications surrounding a local lawsuit.
Salwa Akhter discovered the break-in upon her return on Saturday morning. Burglars had forced open the back doors and broken into two almirahs and a wardrobe. The stolen valuables include two gold bars, a set of jewelry (chains, earrings, and rings), approximately Tk 50,000 to 60,000 in cash, an LED television, an electric stove, and 30 liters of mustard oil. The culprits left behind an iron rod used to pry open the locks.
Speaking from an undisclosed location, Milan Mir expressed deep concern over his family’s safety and urged the local administration to intervene, alleging that political harassment had forced him away from his home.
When contacted, Morelganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahmudur Rahman stated that the police had not yet received a formal complaint but assured that proper legal action would be taken following a thorough investigation into the matter.
