BNP Organizing Secretary Shama Obaed Islam Rinku warned on Saturday that the remnants of the ousted autocratic regime and the defeated forces of 1971 are actively conspiring to destabilize the current government.
Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion and prayer meeting in Faridpur's Nagarkanda Upazila, she alleged that those who oppressed, corrupted and exploited the public for the last 17 years were rightfully removed through the historic July uprising. However, she cautioned that their local allies are now plotting behind the scenes to ensure the current administration fails.
"We believe in a democratic Bangladesh that accommodates multiple political parties and diverse opinions, where everyone enjoys freedom of speech," Shama Obaed told the gathering at the MN Academy grounds, which was organized to mark the 45th death anniversary of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.
Reflecting on the nation's political history, she noted that the adversaries of the Zia family have consistently opposed sovereign democracy in Bangladesh. She praised President Ziaur Rahman for rescuing the country from post-independence economic ruin, establishing foundational industries, promoting women's empowerment and pioneering the vital migrant remittance sector.
Shama Obaed also commended the current leadership of Tarique Rahman, stating that his policies over the last three months mirror his father’s nation-building ideals. She highlighted newly launched public welfare initiatives, including countrywide canal-digging programs and the distribution of family aid cards aimed at stabilizing rural health and food security.
The event was attended by senior local party leaders, including former Nagarkanda Upazila BNP President Habibur Rahman Babul Talukder former Saltha Upazila BNP President Siddiqur Rahman Talukder and former General Secretary Saifur Rahman Mukul, among others.
