Demanding a speedy trial and maximum punishment for the brutal rape and murder of child Ramisa in Dhaka's Pallabi, citizens held a human chain and protest march in Sonargaon on Friday (May 22) morning.
Organized by the Sonargaon Upazila Khelaghar, the demonstration took place in front of the Sonargaon Press Club. Students from various educational institutions and local residents spontaneously joined the program to voice their outrage against rising violence.
Speakers at the rally expressed deep sorrow and anger, stating that Ramisa's tragic death has shaken the nation. They demanded immediate justice through a fast-track tribunal for the perpetrators, as well as for all recent incidents of violence against women and adolescents across the country.
Highlighting a broader crisis, the organizers criticized the current state of public security, noting that women and children feel increasingly unsafe both indoors and outdoors. They warned of launching a tougher movement alongside students if the administration fails to swiftly penalize criminals and improve law and order.
Following the human chain, participants held a protest procession that marched through the main roads of the upazila.
The event, moderated by journalist Mahbubul Islam Sumon, was addressed by prominent local figures, including Sonargaon Upazila Khelaghar General Secretary Lion Raja Rahman, former Sisimpur Country Director Md. Shah Alam, Udichi Shilpi Gosthi President Shankar Prakash, and Sonargaon Sahitya Niketan General Secretary Rabiul Hussain, among others.
