


A series of thefts in the municipality area of Sariakandi upazila in Bogra has created fear among residents and business owners. At least four theft incidents have taken place in the last 10 days. Although complaints and cases have been filed in some incidents, police have yet to arrest those involved.
The latest theft occurred early Thursday (May 14), when thieves broke the shutter lock of Shobha Jewelers in Sariakandi municipality and stole gold and silver ornaments. A similar theft also took place at Nirman Jewelers on the same night. No case had been filed in that incident at the time of reporting.
Md. Saidul Sarkar, manager of Shobha Jewelers, said he was informed in the morning that the shop had been looted. According to him, the shop contained around 3.5 bhari of gold and between 1,500 and 2,000 bhari of silver, valued at nearly Tk 14 lakh.
Likhan, owner of Nirman Jewelers, said the thieves stole around 3 bhari of gold and 12 bhari of silver, including gold bangles. He estimated the loss at around Tk 8 lakh.
Earlier, on May 13, thieves cut the window grill of Sariakandi Degree College and stole approximately Tk 4.2 lakh. The college authorities later filed a complaint with the police.
College principal Anwar Hossain said police visited the campus and are investigating the incident.
On May 4, thieves also stole a Discover motorcycle belonging to Sariakandi Police Station constable Saju Mia from the Tipur More area. A case was filed in connection with the theft.
Local residents said most of the thefts targeted shops and institutions located beside main roads and important areas. The repeated incidents and failure to identify the culprits have increased public concern over security.
Sirajul Islam Phul, president of Banik Samabay Samity Limited, said business owners are deeply worried. He urged police to quickly identify and arrest those responsible.
Responding to questions about police action, Sariakandi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) A.F.M. Asaduzzaman said police have launched special operations and prepared a list of suspected thieves. He added that night guard arrangements are being planned in vulnerable areas.
Assistant Superintendent of Police of Gabtoli Circle Md. Humayon Kabir said police teams are actively working to arrest the suspects.
Sariakandi Municipality BNP President Shahadat Hossain Soni said local businesses also need to improve security measures, including appointing night guards. However, he urged police to take stronger steps to ensure public safety.
