Nineteen nos. containers of dangerous goods that had been lying at Chittagong Port for a long time have been destroyed in an environmentally friendly manner. The destroyed containers are unfit for auction and other perishable goods, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) said.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) gave this information in a press release on Tuesday. It said, "The Inter-Agency Committee formed to destroy unfit for auction and other perishable goods, led by Mohammad Nurullah Noori, Additional Divisional Commissioner (General), Chittagong Division, supervised the demolition work, along with representatives from the Department of Environment, Department of Explosives, DGFI, NSI, Chittagong Port Authority, Chittagong Metropolitan Police and Chittagong Customs House."
The demolition work was carried out from 9 am on October 25 to 9:30 pm on October 26 (Sunday). Fire Service and Civil Defense, Ansar members and Port Police provided overall support including ensuring the safety of the demolition work.
The destroyed products include Uncoated Calcium Carbonate (16 containers), Orange Emulsion (1 container), Sweet Whey Powder (1 container) and Skimmed Milk Powder (1 container), which had been lying in a dilapidated state at the Chittagong Port for a long time, creating a security risk to the port.
In October last year, the Chittagong Customs House and the Chittagong Port Authority jointly took the initiative and successfully removed 4 highly flammable Hazardous Cargo Containers that had been lying in the port premises for 14 years from the port area and destroyed them in an environmentally friendly manner.
It is worth noting that in order to reduce the container congestion at the Chittagong Port, the National Board of Revenue has issued a special order to complete the inventory of about 6069 containers (about 10,000 TEUs) that have been lying in the port for a long time and sell them at auction as soon as possible. The inventory of the goods in the containers has already been successfully completed and a significant amount of the containers have been auctioned. The National Board of Revenue is optimistic that the Chittagong Customs House will be able to make a significant contribution to reducing the container congestion at the Chittagong Port by completing the ongoing auction expeditiously.
In the interest of the overall security of the Chittagong Port, the work of destroying the dangerous goods lying at the port for a long time will continue on an urgent basis, the notification said.
