A 32-year-old tea shop owner was brutally beaten to death by a group of masked men in the early hours of Monday. The victim, Shahadat Hossain, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chattogram city.
The attack occurred around 11:00 PM on Sunday near the Model Mosque area on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Highway. Shahadat, a resident of Dhemsha Union and father of four, was sitting in front of his shop when the incident took place.
Witnesses reported that a group of 10 to 15 masked men arrived at the scene on motorcycles and a CNG-run autorickshaw. Without provocation, they attacked Shahadat from behind, striking him repeatedly on the head and body with hammers and sticks.
The assailants fled the scene as locals rushed to help. Shahadat was initially taken to a hospital in Keranihat and later moved to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Due to the lack of an available ICU bed, he was eventually transferred to a private facility, where he passed away at 5:30 AM on Monday.
The victim’s elder brother, Mobarak Hossain, stated that the family is in shock over the sudden and violent nature of the attack. "He was just sitting on a chair when they came and hit him with hammers," he said.
Manjurul Haque, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkania Police Station, confirmed that an investigation is underway. "We are looking into the matter and waiting for a formal written complaint from the family to initiate further legal proceedings," the OC added.
