Roads, Railways, Shipping, and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam stated on Tuesday that despite the challenge of 15 million people leaving Dhaka for Eid, government measures will ensure a smooth journey for all.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Gona Bridge in Bakerganj, the Minister acknowledged the pressure on the transport network over the next 48 to 72 hours. "Following the Prime Minister’s instructions, we are working to ensure that everyone can reach home without inconvenience," he said.
Minister Alam noted that the Dhaka-Barisal highway remains a narrow two-lane road, which is insufficient for current traffic volumes. "The government recognizes the need to widen this highway. Having assessed the situation firsthand, we are prioritizing plans to fast-track its expansion," he added.
The newly inaugurated Gona Bridge establishes a direct road link between Bakerganj in Barisal and Dumki in Patuakhali. This connection is expected to
Benefit approximately 500,000 residents in remote areas. Reduce travel time by nearly two hours. Eliminate the isolation of parts of Patuakhali, fostering regional economic growth.
Addressing maritime connectivity, the Minister highlighted that 7,500 kilometers of waterways are currently maintained through regular dredging. "Work is ongoing on 1,200 kilometers, with a long-term goal to expand this to 4,500 kilometers," he said, ensuring seamless movement between Dhaka Sadarghat, Barisal, and Bhola.
The event was attended by State Minister for Roads Habibur Rashid, Barisal-6 MP Abul Hossain Khan, and senior officials from the Roads Department.
