A mobile court in Bhurungamari has fined a bakery owner Tk 50,000 for producing adulterated semai and preparing food in an unhygienic environment.
The action was taken against a factory named Comilla Bakery located near the upazila bus stand during a drive conducted on Thursday (March 12).
The operation was led by Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Shahadat Hossain in a joint initiative with the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) Rangpur office.
BSTI Inspector Khandaker Jaminur Rahman and members of Bhurungamari police were also present during the raid.
According to officials, the mobile court found that the bakery was using textile dye instead of approved food colouring while producing lachcha semai. Authorities also discovered that several bakery items, including semai, were being prepared and stored in an unhygienic environment.
Officials said the factory failed to follow proper hygiene and food safety standards during production and storage, posing potential health risks to consumers.
Following the inspection, the bakery owner, Din Islam, was fined Tk 50,000 under the relevant provisions of the Mobile Court Act 2009 and the BSTI Act.
UNO Shahadat Hossain said the administration will continue such drives to ensure food safety and maintain hygiene standards in local markets.
He also warned food traders to produce, store and sell food products according to proper hygiene regulations.
