The Sugandha River, which flows around the city of Jhalakathi, has been enhancing the beauty of both its banks for many years. However, each year, numerous families residing along the river are forced to relocate due to severe erosion during the monsoon season. Even in winter, the swift currents created by LPG-carrying ships fail to halt the erosion of the banks.
The destruction of homes, their gradual disappearance into the river, the loss of agricultural land, and the constant uncertainty have become an unseen menace in the lives of the local population. The aspirations of the residents living along both banks of the Sugandha River and the Gabkhan Channel to overcome their prolonged hardships are now closer to being realized.
The project titled "Protection of various areas of Sadar Upazila and Nalchati Upazila of Jhalakathi district from erosion of the Sugandha River," initiated by the Jhalakathi Water Development Department, is advancing swiftly, bringing a renewed sense of hope to the lives of those living by the river.
Workers are now diligently engaged in the project area every day. Modern river management solutions, including safety dams, geo bags, and cement concrete blocks, are being installed along the riverbanks.
Officials from PAUBO have stated that the 13.215 km riverbank conservation initiative being carried out in Jhalakathi Sadar and Nalchiti upazilas is designed with a focus on long-term sustainability and adherence to international standards.
The design has been crafted with careful consideration of the flow pattern, soil composition, and erosion risk of the Suhandha River. It is anticipated that these initiatives will ensure the long-term stability of the riverbank.
Residents are already experiencing the effects of change. Those who hesitated to invest in their properties a few months back are now making plans to construct new homes. Farmers are getting ready to cultivate early-season crops with confidence. Traders report a decrease in erosion fears, leading to a renewed vigor in business and commerce.
Inhabitants of the riverbank express, 'Once the project is finalized, the Bheribad area will transform into a tourist destination. Furthermore, the value of land adjacent to the river is expected to rise significantly, positively influencing the local economy.'
Residents along the Sugandha River state, 'Preventing river erosion transcends being merely a government initiative; it embodies a dream intertwined with the survival struggle of those living by the river. Upon project completion, individuals will transition into a safer reality with improved housing and business opportunities.'
To ensure the project's successful execution, the task force committee established by the Ministry of Water Resources is consistently evaluating the quality of the work and closely observing whether the construction adheres to the design specifications. This diligence will guarantee that the entire project is secure, high-quality, and durable, according to project officials.
Local public representatives and development stakeholders are confident that this initiative will not only safeguard homes from erosion but will also pave the way for new opportunities in the social and economic advancement of Jhalakathi.
New markets, restaurants, parks, agricultural ventures, and sustainable eco-friendly communities will emerge along the riverbank. Overall, the Sugandha River Conservation Project is now paving the way for a secure, stable, and development-focused future for the residents of Jhalakathi.
Upon completion of the project, the banks of the Sugandha River will be free from erosion and will evolve into an area with exceptional opportunities for sustainable development.
