Brazil and Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has weighed in on the growing debate surrounding Neymar’s inclusion in the upcoming World Cup squad.
With the final roster announcement set for May 18, head coach Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear that physical fitness is his top priority for the tournament in North America. This stance puts the 34-year-old Neymar in a difficult position following a series of career-stalling injuries.
While Ancelotti acknowledges Neymar’s world-class talent, he has emphasized that only players at 100% physical capacity will travel. Casemiro believes that even a limited role would be acceptable to the star forward.
"If you talk to Neymar about the World Cup, he will want to go, even if Ancelotti suggests a role off the bench," Casemiro told ESPN Brasil. "I think the best approach is a conversation. He could be crucial for 20 or 30 minutes in a specific match. I trust Ancelotti; there is no coach better at handling these situations."
Casemiro admitted the constant speculation regarding Neymar is "annoying" but insisted the forward has "nothing left to prove to anyone." He expressed his hope that his long-time friend finds his form in time to end the debate.
Neymar now faces a race against time. Following a recent goal against Deportivo Recoleta, he has only three matches remaining two in the Brasileirão and one in the Copa do Brasil to convince Ancelotti that he is physically ready for the global stage.
