Iraq secured the final spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 win over Bolivia in an inter-confederation playoff, ending a 40-year absence from the tournament.
Ali Al Hamadi gave Iraq an early lead in the 10th minute at Monterrey Stadium. Bolivia equalised before halftime through Moises Paniagua. Aymen Hussein scored the decisive goal in the 53rd minute to seal victory.
Iraq will play in Group I alongside France, Norway and Senegal when the tournament begins on June 11 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani praised the team, calling the qualification a major milestone for Iraqi football and a moment of pride for the nation.
Coach Graham Arnold credited his players’ determination. “They showed great fighting spirit and defended strongly. That made the difference,” he said.
This will be Iraq’s second World Cup appearance, their first since 1986.
In another playoff, DR Congo qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1974 after defeating Jamaica. Defender Axel Tuanzebe scored the winning goal in extra time. Tuanzebe, who previously represented England at youth level, said scoring for his country was a dream come true.
DR Congo will compete in Group K with Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan.
Sweden also booked their place with a dramatic 3-2 win over Poland. Viktor Gyokeres scored a late winner to complete a remarkable turnaround under coach Graham Potter.
