Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim proved his tactical flexibility on Friday, abandoning his trademark system to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
In a match defined by defensive resilience rather than attacking flair, United relied on a sublime volley from Patrick Dorgu and a standout defensive performance to claim just their second clean sheet of the Premier League season.
For the first time in his 13-month tenure, Amorim deviated from his preferred three-at-the-back formation. Despite previously joking that "not even the Pope" could make him change, he deployed a traditional back four. The gamble paid off, even as United conceded the majority of possession (66.6%) and faced 16 shots compared to their own nine.
The victory was anchored by an unlikely center-back pairing, Lisandro Martinez returning from a long-term knee injury, the World Cup winner provided veteran leadership and physical dominance despite his stature.
Ayden Heaven, 19-year-old academy graduate continued his rapid ascent, winning Man-of-the-Match honors for a mature performance. Amorim noted that fit-again stars like Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire will face a serious challenge to reclaim their spots from the youngster. Man Utd 33.4% – Newcastle 66.6% (United’s lowest this season). Patrick Dorgu scored his first goal for the club with a brilliant first-half volley, Newcastle 43 – Man Utd 15.
Amorim described the win as one of his most "satisfying," emphasizing that the squad "suffered together" to protect the narrow lead. While Eddie Howe’s Newcastle dominated territorially, they failed to convert pressure into goals, leaving Old Trafford empty-handed.
