The holy Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated across Bangladesh on Thursday, May 28, following the sighting of the crescent moon of the month of Zilhaj in the country's sky on Monday evening.
The official announcement was made by Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain after a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee at the Islamic Foundation's conference room inside the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
With the moon sighted, the counting of the holy month of Zilhaj for the Hijri year 1447 will officially commence on Tuesday, May 19. Consequently, the 10th of Zilhaj—the day of the festival of sacrifice—falls on May 28.
"The decision was taken after reviewing comprehensive field reports received from all deputy commissioners, divisional and district offices of the Islamic Foundation, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, and the Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation (SPARRSO)," the minister told reporters.
All regional data confirmed that the crescent moon was clearly visible in the Bangladeshi sky on Monday, corresponding to the 29th day of the preceding Islamic month of Zilqad. The minister extended his festive greetings to the nation, wishing for a peaceful and joyous Eid-ul-Azha celebration across the country.
