Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that the government is actively working to strengthen democratic institutions revitalize the economy, and elevate living standards in Bangladesh.

Speaking at the Bengal Delta Conference 2026 in Dhaka, Fakhrul emphasized the government's commitment to building a democratic inclusive and exploitation-free nation. He noted that the recent student-people's movement has unlocked new possibilities for political change and the restoration of democracy.

Addressing the economic landscape Fakhrul acknowledged that global conflicts—including the Russia-Ukraine war and US-Iran tensions—alongside long-standing domestic corruption and money laundering have severely strained Bangladesh’s economy. However he expressed confidence in a strong recovery driven by public resilience.

To overcome these challenges, the government is restructuring the economy by generating employment boosting investment and reforming the banking sector. Fakhrul highlighted that the recent budget includes targeted measures to promote industrialization, agricultural advancement, and the rural economy.

On political reforms, the minister announced ongoing consultations with political parties to build consensus on constitutional changes, stressing that sustainable democracy requires strong institutions. He also called for greater regional cooperation and international partner engagement in Bangladesh’s development.

Fakhrul paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War and the 2024 movement, reaffirming his hope that courage and unity will forge a new dignified Bangladesh for all.
