President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged China to expand its investment in Bangladesh and assist in ensuring the safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees.
The President made the call during a farewell courtesy visit by outgoing Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen at Bangabhaban on Wednesday morning. Commending China's role in addressing the Rohingya crisis, the President expressed confidence that Beijing's ongoing efforts would help achieve a lasting solution.
He called for deeper bilateral cooperation and increased Chinese investment in key sectors including ready-made garments, electric vehicles, semiconductors, solar energy and high-tech electronics. Highlighting key infrastructure projects such as the modernization of Mongla Port and the establishment of the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone he reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to regional connectivity initiatives like the Kunming-Chattogram corridor.
President Alamgir also requested continued technical and financial assistance for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project. Recalling historical visits to Beijing by former President Ziaur Rahman as well as his own trip earlier this year, he described China as a trusted friend and key strategic partner.
In response Ambassador Yao Wen assured continued Chinese support including technical expertise to treat blood cancer at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH). The President expressed gratitude for China's assistance notably the construction of the 1,000-bed Bangladesh-China Friendship General Hospital and praised the outgoing ambassador's contributions to diplomatic relations.
