Dr. Reza Kibria, the son of the late former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria, has officially joined the BNP. He became a member of the party during an event at the BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan at 11:30 am today. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Salauddin Ahmed were present to welcome Reza.
Previously, Mr. Reza Kibria held the position of general secretary of Gono Forum and later became the founding convener of Gono Odhikar Parishad.
Kibria expected to run in the upcoming national election representing the Habiganj-1 constituency with the BNP's paddy-sheaf symbol.
During the event, Fakhrul expressed, "We are delighted and proud to have Reza Kibria join our party. On behalf of our chairperson, Khaleda Zia, and acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, we extend our warm welcome to him."
Fakhrul praised the current environment, stating that under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus, the interim government has formed several reform commissions, leading to a signed reform charter. He believes this has created a situation and environment in the country that is conducive to holding a free and fair election.
The interim government has already announced that the election will be held in February 2026, and preparations are underway. The BNP is "very hopeful" that the people will seize this opportunity, following the recent mass uprising, to form a truly representative parliament and establish a democratically chosen government.
Fakhrul stressed that this chance has come after "many ups and downs, after much struggle, much bloodshed, and many sacrifices" and offers an opportunity to rebuild Bangladesh in a new way. The statement was made during a joining ceremony at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan political office, with BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed also present.
