Nazrul Islam Khan, a Standing Committee member of the BNP, announced the party's full cooperation with the Election Commission (EC) to ensure the upcoming national elections, slated for February, are free, fair, and impartial.
The announcement followed a meeting between a four-member BNP delegation and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Nirbachan Bhaban. The delegation included Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, advisory council member Ismail Zabiullah, and former EC acting secretary Dr. Mohammad Zakaria.
Nazrul Islam Khan stated that the BNP is committed to upholding the electoral code of conduct and supporting a credible voting process, aligning with their 16-year struggle to restore democracy through fair elections.
Khan welcomed the EC’s initiative to register expatriate Bangladeshis as voters, calling it a fulfillment of a BNP demand. He urged the EC to extend registration timelines in countries with large expatriate populations (e.g., Saudi Arabia and the UAE) due to access difficulties. The BNP leader requested that Bangladeshi passports be accepted as valid identity documents for expatriates who lack National ID cards.
The EC reportedly responded positively and agreed to consider the proposal regarding the expatriate registration issues. Khan mentioned that the newly approved referendum law followed broad discussions. He emphasized that security is inseparable from a free and impartial electoral environment.
