Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), held a press conference today (November 23) in Dhaka regarding the party's central election management committee. During the conference, he expressed significant concerns about the current electoral environment.
Nahid Islam strongly criticized the Election Commission (EC) and the government, alleging they are failing to take a strong position to ensure a fair election.1 He raised alarm over the behavior of leaders and activists from various political parties, stating, "We are seeing that leaders and activists of various parties are openly talking about how to seize the administration, how to control it." He also claimed there is no level playing field in the election campaign, criticizing the government for not taking a strong position to prevent the misuse of money and professional power, a problem from previous elections.
Despite media speculation regarding potential alliances, Nahid Islam confirmed that the NCP would contest the upcoming election independently in all 300 constituencies. He urged the public not to heed any misinformation regarding alliances. However, he stated that if anyone aligning with the NCP's ideals wished to join in the future, it would be openly announced in advance.
The NCP leader differentiated his party's approach from others, noting that other parties are re-nominating candidates who represent "no trace of new politics." In contrast, the NCP is focused on promoting fresh leadership: "We want to move forward with new, honest, competent, and qualified people."
The press conference coincided with the start of a two-day interview process for prospective candidates. Nahid Islam noted that 1,484 candidates are being interviewed, confirming the people of the country have supported the NCP's call. The final list of qualified candidates will be published after the interview process is completed.
