The government has dispatched all necessary legal documents to the UAE to extradite former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed expressed optimism that the Dubai government will hand over the graft-accused former police chief soon after completing legal formalities. He disclosed the development while speaking to reporters after a police award ceremony at the Secretariat on Saturday afternoon.
"The Home Ministry is working at an accelerated pace," the minister said. "On June 12, Dubai Federal Police confirmed Benazir's arrest via an Interpol red notice. Although we had 30 days to send the formal extradition request, the government completed the entire process in just one day."
Detailing the administrative steps, the minister said police officials compiled a comprehensive 144-page dossier over the last few days, containing arrest warrants and case details.
"I signed these documents last night. They have been translated into Arabic and dispatched to Dubai via diplomatic channels. We have also officially notified the UAE Embassy in Dhaka," he added.
When asked about the challenges of bringing him back, the minister said, "This is a visible reality, not speculation. We firmly believe the UAE government will deport him following due legal process. The government will maintain round-the-clock communication and monitoring."
Senior Secretary of the Public Security Division Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, Inspector General of Police Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, and DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, among other senior officials, were present at the event.
Benazir Ahmed faces extensive corruption charges in Bangladesh. Following his recent arrest by Dubai police, Dhaka is actively pursuing his swift repatriation under existing legal and diplomatic frameworks.
