Rising geopolitical tensions have triggered deadly maritime clashes across critical Middle Eastern shipping routes with heavily disrupting global trade and driving up oil prices.
In the Red Sea’s Bab el-Mandeb strait an attack by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis on the Egyptian-owned cargo ship Tihamah killed four crew members, three Pakistanis and one Indonesian. Two Yemeni rescue workers also died when Houthis struck the vessel a second time during rescue operations. The Houthis claimed they targeted a Saudi military vessel enforcing a regional siege with an allegation Riyadh firmly denies.
Separately in the Gulf of Oman, the U.S. military fired Hellfire missiles from a helicopter to disable the Panama-flagged container ship Vela Nova. U.S. Central Command stated the vessel ignored repeated warnings to stop violating a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
These dual choke-point attacks have crippled maritime traffic. Ship crossings through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb have plummeted, pushing Brent crude oil prices to $88.91 per barrel.
Diplomatic prospects remain dim. Iranian officials declared the vital Strait of Hormuz will stay closed to shipping until Washington meets their conditions including unfreezing assets and ending regional military operations. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump warned of severe economic pressure or further military action, signaling an increasingly volatile standoff with no immediate peace deal in sight.
