Residents of the capital faced "unhealthy" air quality on Saturday morning, with Dhaka ranking 5th among the world's most polluted cities.
At approximately 9:00 AM on April 11, Dhaka recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 154. While this marks a slight improvement from earlier peaks, the air remains a significant health risk. In comparison, Hanoi, Vietnam, topped the global list with a score of 185, followed by Chiang Mai, Thailand (178), Delhi, India (167), and Cairo, Egypt (164).
The AQI system informs the public about local air safety. Scores between 151 and 200 are classified as 'unhealthy', indicating that the general public may begin to experience health effects, while members of sensitive groups may experience more serious effects.
Health Advisory Children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory illnesses or heart disease are advised to avoid prolonged outdoor exertion. Wearing a well-fitted mask is recommended for those who must spend time outside.
Dhaka’s air quality historically worsens during the dry winter and spring months due to construction dust, brick kilns, and vehicle emissions, typically seeing relief only with the arrival of the monsoon rains.
