Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan stated on Wednesday that individual YouTubers now often wield more influence than established media houses.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat, the Minister highlighted that rapid technological advancements have fundamentally shifted the global media landscape. "The structure and character of media are changing," Swapan said. "Due to modern communication systems, a single YouTuber's reach can now exceed that of a traditional media organization."
The Minister noted that the rise of online news portals and IP TV has made it difficult to apply existing legal frameworks to these new platforms. Despite these challenges, he acknowledged that digital media is now an "integral part of society" and requires a strategic approach rather than rigid, outdated regulations.
Addressing the rights of media professionals, the Minister clarified that while private owners have the authority to manage their staff, the Ministry holds a moral obligation to ensure a safe working environment. However, he pointed out the lack of specific laws to enforce this on private entrepreneurs.
Swapan concluded by calling for a coordinated strategy involving all stakeholders to address media issues holistically, rather than through isolated policies.
