National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam announced today that the formation of a caretaker government cannot happen until after a referendum on the July Charter. Speaking after a meeting with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Nahid emphasized that the caretaker issue is now structurally linked to the Charter, including a "Note of Dissent," and will only be decided once the referendum is complete. Key Takeaways from Nahid Islam: Caretaker Government have No possibility of forming one at this stage; it is contingent on the July Charter referendum results.
The NCP will only consider signing the July Charter after receiving assurances on its implementation, as the initial ceremony occurred without their participation.
To ensure the Charter's effect, the NCP proposed that the Chief Adviser, Dr. Yunus, should issue a constitutional order, asserting that the "sovereign power of the people... is now vested in Muhammad Yunus—not in the president."
The NCP welcomed the charging of military personnel at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). However, Nahid raised concerns over accused individuals being released on bail in other related cases nationwide and threatening victims' families. The party demanded a roadmap for justice and safety for affected families, to be announced before the upcoming election.
The NCP expects the government to maintain a neutral environment and ensure a level playing field for credible elections.
The NCP delegation, led by Nahid Islam, included Joint Conveners Samanta Sharmin and Khaled Saifullah, and Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam.
