Heavy fog significantly impacted operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Saturday, forcing eight international and domestic flights to divert to alternative destinations. Visibility issues caused by the thick winter mist prompted airport authorities to reroute aircraft to ensure passenger safety.
According to a statement from the airport authorities, the diverted flights were sent to the following locations, Kolkata, India: 4 flights, Chattogram, Bangladesh: 3 flights and Bangkok, Thailand: 1 flight.
Airport officials confirmed that "normal flight operations will resume once weather conditions improve." In the meantime affected airlines are providing necessary refreshments and hotel accommodations to travelers stranded by the rerouting.
Authorities emphasized that the diversions were a standard precautionary measure due to low visibility on the runway.
Winter fog frequently disrupts the flight schedule in Dhaka during December and January, often leading to delays for both departing and arriving aircraft. Travelers are advised to check their flight status with respective airlines before heading to the airport.
