Police recovered the hanging body of Mohammad Abul Hossain, 45, a manager of Janata Bank, from a residence in Khorshedbag Residential Area of Halishahar in Chattogram city early Monday (September 14).
His body was found inside Flat 6/B of the Imperial Arkit building. Police also recovered a handwritten note from the scene.
Abul Hossain's wife, Sharmin Akhter, 39, filed an unnatural death case with Halishahar Police Station. Police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
According to the case statement, Sharmin and her husband went to sleep in separate rooms at around 1am after having dinner on Sunday night. She woke up at around 5:20am on Monday to perform the Fajr prayer and found the door of the designated prayer room closed.
After pushing the door open, she found her husband hanging from a ceiling fan with a bedsheet wrapped around his neck.
Her elder son, Adib Hossain, 12, came to the room after hearing her screams. Sharmin's sister, Suraiya Akhter, also arrived at the scene. They cut the bedsheet and brought Abul Hossain down before informing relatives.
Suraiya's husband, Mohammad Shahajalal, then called the national emergency service 999 and informed police.
Police from Halishahar Police Station went to the residence, prepared a preliminary report and sent the body to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
The note recovered from the scene reportedly mentioned mental and financial pressures Abul Hossain had been facing in recent months.
In the note, he reportedly wrote that he had been dealing with various problems for several months. He specifically referred to professional pressure related to decisions over loan disbursements, transfers and other matters after taking charge of the “Mohammadpur GB Branch.”
He also reportedly mentioned financial difficulties caused by failing to recover money owed by various businesspeople.
The note further referred to a recently filed criminal case concerning a cheque-related incident in 2021 against him and several colleagues when he was the manager of the Lal Dighi branch. He said he learned about the case about two weeks earlier and had been unable to sleep for the previous two to three weeks because of the issue.
At the end of the note, Abul Hossain reportedly asked family members to look after one another and wrote that no one should be held responsible for his death.
Halishahar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Zainal Abedin Mondal said the body had been sent for autopsy and that an unnatural death case had been filed.
