Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam issued a stern warning on Tuesday, stating that frequent road and highway blockades over "trivial issues" must end to ensure a secure environment for the national election.
Speaking at a briefing for field-level officers at the Nirbachan Bhaban, the IGP cautioned that persistent instability would hamper the police's capacity to provide full security support for the polls scheduled for February 12, 2026.
Addressing Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), and election officials, the IGP emphasized that maintaining public order is a prerequisite for a successful election. He noted that while the police force has significantly recovered its capabilities following the challenges of the post-July movement period, strict measures are now necessary to prevent social instability.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin and other commissioners provided guidelines during the session, emphasizing a free and fair voting process.
The IGP also lauded the EC’s move to empower Electoral Inquiry Committees for summary trials of election-related offenses while seeking clearer guidelines on the transfer of lower-ranking police personnel during the election period.
