The government has decided to formulate a separate policy for autorickshaw operations in Dhaka to bring greater discipline and control to the capital’s roads.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Saturday (August 29). Prime Minister Tarique Rahman chaired the meeting, which focused on reducing traffic congestion, modernising traffic management and restoring discipline in the transport sector.
The proposed policy will specifically address the movement and operation of autorickshaws in Dhaka. The government is seeking to introduce a more organised regulatory framework for the sector as part of its broader traffic-management strategy.
However, details of the proposed policy-including possible restrictions, designated routes, operating areas or implementation timelines-were not announced at the meeting.
The meeting also decided to introduce an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system at toll plazas on expressways and flyovers.
The system is intended to make toll collection faster, more efficient and technology-based. An application will also be developed in connection with the initiative.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman instructed the relevant authorities to complete the work within four months.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, Local Government State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, Pabna-5 MP Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister and other senior officials attended the meeting.
