Lohajang Crackdown on Illegal Dredger: Machine Disabled, Pipes Destroyed

The Lohajang Upazila administration has launched a crackdown on an illegally operated dredger used for sand extraction in the Ghasbhog area of Khidirpara Union.

During the drive on Saturday (August 29) at around 5:00pm, authorities disabled one dredger and destroyed the pipes being used to extract and transport sand.

The operation was led by Lohajang Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Farzana Bobby Mitu.

During the operation, the authorities disabled the dredger that was allegedly being used to extract sand illegally. The pipes connected to the dredger for lifting and transporting sand were also destroyed.

According to the upazila administration, unauthorised sand extraction is having harmful effects on rivers, agricultural land and the surrounding environment.

Officials said regular enforcement drives are being conducted to prevent illegal dredging and unauthorised sand extraction in the area.

The Lohajang Upazila administration said enforcement against illegal dredgers and unauthorised sand extraction will continue in the public interest.

Authorities warned that anyone found extracting sand illegally or causing environmental damage in violation of existing laws will face legal action.

The latest operation is part of ongoing efforts by the local administration to protect waterways, agricultural land and the environment from the impacts of illegal sand mining.
