Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir has directed field-level police officials to work closely with the public to prevent and combat crime across the country.
He issued the directive on Saturday (August 29) while delivering the concluding remarks at the final session of the day-long Police Headquarters Quarterly Conference at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh Police Lines.
The conference reviewed the country’s overall crime situation and discussed measures to strengthen policing, improve investigations and increase the rate of convictions.
IGP Ali Hossain Fakir urged police officials to remain vigilant against misinformation and rumours and to take preventive action based on advance intelligence.
“Necessary measures must be taken by collecting intelligence before an incident occurs,” he said, stressing the importance of proactive policing.
He also called on police personnel to perform their responsibilities in a coordinated and united manner, emphasising that the police force is working for the country and the welfare of the people.
The IGP particularly stressed the importance of community engagement in crime prevention, urging field-level officers to involve local people in efforts to maintain law and order.
Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Khondkar Rafiqul Islam presented an overview of the country’s crime situation during the April-June 2026 quarter.
The conference examined several major indicators of law enforcement performance, including:
Police officials were instructed to strengthen investigations into robbery and rape cases and increase monitoring of cases involving attacks on police personnel.
The meeting also placed emphasis on reducing the backlog of cases and improving the conviction rate through more effective investigation and prosecution.
Field-level police officers were also directed to investigate General Diary (GD) entries concerning missing persons with greater importance and diligence.
The authorities stressed that such complaints should not be overlooked and that appropriate investigative measures should be taken to determine the whereabouts of missing individuals.
Heads of several specialised police units also provided instructions to field-level officers regarding the activities and responsibilities of their respective units.
Those present included PBI chief Additional IGP Mohammad Mostafa Kamal, CID chief Additional IGP Barrister Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, ATU chief Additional IGP Md Rezaul Karim, RAB Director General Additional IGP Md Ahsan Habib Palash and SB chief Additional IGP Sardar Nurul Amin, among others.
The conference was attended by additional inspectors general, metropolitan police commissioners, range deputy inspectors general and superintendents of police from different districts.
At the programme, 26 police personnel were awarded IGP Badges in recognition of commendable work during Police Week 2026.
IGP Ali Hossain Fakir personally presented the badges to the recipients.
Earlier in the day, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed inaugurated the conference as the chief guest, while Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Manzur Morshed Chowdhury attended as the special guest.
