The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has advised the country's four seaports to hoist local cautionary Signal No. 3 after a low-pressure area formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and northern Odisha.
According to a special weather bulletin, the system may move further west-northwest, bringing strong winds over maritime ports and the north Bay. Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports have been told to keep the cautionary signal hoisted while fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay have been advised to stay close to shore and proceed cautiously until further notice.
Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir told bdnews24.com that if the system moves west-northwest, it is likely to shift over land. "If it intensifies after moving over land with its effects may extend somewhat toward our southeastern coast but its maximum impact will be in India" he said, adding that the system's effect on Bangladesh's sea areas is expected to remain limited even if it strengthens into a land depression.
BMD's regular bulletin said the monsoon trough currently runs from Rajasthan through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, the low-pressure center, southern Bangladesh and into Assam. The monsoon remains active over Bangladesh and strong over the north Bay.
For the 24 hours from Saturday morning also light to moderate rain with gusty winds is expected in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with scattered rain likely in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal. Temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged.
The highest temperature recorded was 36.2°C in Dimla, Nilphamari while Sylhet recorded the lowest at 24°C. Sreemangal in Sylhet saw the highest rainfall at 57mm followed by Rangamati (29mm) and Satkhira (26mm).
