Russia’s Foreign Ministry has issued a stern condemnation of recent Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon calling for an immediate ceasefire to prevent a "catastrophic" regional escalation.
The diplomatic push comes as dozens of nations at the United Nations united on Thursday to denounce "unacceptable aggressive behavior" following the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Russia Warns of Negotiation Derailment
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that the aggressive military actions by Israel threaten to "derail the negotiation process that was beginning to take shape." Moscow’s call for a ceasefire explicitly demands that any truce between Israel and regional actors must extend to include Lebanese territory.
The statement followed a warning from Iran, which asserted that Lebanon remains an “inseparable part” of any regional ceasefire deal. The humanitarian toll in Lebanon has reached critical levels, with recent bombardments killing over 250 people and displacing more than one million civilians.
Global Outcry Over Peacekeeper Deaths
In a rare show of unity 63 countries and the European Union issued a joint statement at the UN on Thursday. Read by Indonesian Ambassador Umar Hadi, the statement expressed "deep concern" over the humanitarian crisis and the "extensive destruction of civilian infrastructure."
The group highlighted that attacks on UN personnel could constitute war crimes under international law. They urged the UN Security Council to strengthen protections for the "Blue Helmets" operating in increasingly hazardous conditions.
UN Investigation Reveals Deadly Details
Preliminary findings from a UN probe into the deaths of the Indonesian soldiers on March 29 and 30 have added weight to these condemnations: Israeli Tank Fire: One peacekeeper was killed by a 120mm projectile fired from an Israeli Merkava tank near Adshit al-Qusayr.
Explosive Device: Two other peacekeepers were killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) near Bani Hayyan, which the UN states was "most likely placed by Hezbollah."
UNIFIL confirmed that it had provided the Israeli military with the precise coordinates of all its positions on March 6 and March 22 to mitigate such risks.
The Humanitarian Crisis
UN Secretary-General António Guterres joined the chorus of condemnation describing the scale of civilian casualties as "unacceptable." Since the escalation began earlier this year over 1,200 people have been killed in Lebanon and nearly a quarter of the population has been forced to flee their homes.
While Russia, China and several EU nations have pushed for immediate de-escalation, notable absences from the joint UN statement included Israel, Lebanon and the United States signaling a continued diplomatic divide as the conflict enters a dangerous new phase.
