A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan on Tuesday evening, leaving at least one person dead and 11 others injured after residential structures collapsed in Jhelum district.
The tremors, which caused widespread panic, were felt across several cities, including Sarai Alamgir, Bhera, Malakwal, Phalia, and Mandi Bahauddin.
The worst damage occurred in the Jalalpur Sharif area of Jhelum's Pind Dadan Khan tehsil. Local administrative officials confirmed that a 14-year-old boy lost his life in a structure failure, while approximately 10 houses were badly damaged or destroyed by the seismic shockwaves.
In one instance, a roof collapse trapped four family members, who were rescued with minor injuries and rushed to the Rural Health Center (RHC) in Jalalpur Sharif.
Jhelum Deputy Commissioner Mir Reza Ozgen stated that emergency responders, police, and local rescue teams reached the affected sites immediately to manage search, rescue, and structural damage assessments.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the earthquake struck at 7:06 PM at a shallow depth of 12 kilometers. Its epicenter was located 58 kilometers southwest of Jhelum. Emergency relief teams remain on high alert in the affected areas as assessment work continues.
