A Russian missile strike on a residential neighborhood in Kharkiv killed two people on Friday, including a three-year-old boy. The attack on Ukraine’s second-largest city left at least 28 others injured and almost completely destroyed a five-story apartment building.
Rescue teams recovered the bodies of a woman and a child from the rubble. Local officials believe the victims were a mother and son. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike as "heinous," noting that the attack occurred despite ongoing international diplomatic efforts.
The strike hit central Kharkiv's Kyivskyi district in the afternoon, causing a large fire and damaging nearby shops and a hospital. Injured: 28 people, including a six-month-old baby. Hospitalized: 16 victims, with one woman reported in serious condition. Search Efforts: Over 80 volunteers and emergency workers continue to clear debris, as more victims may be trapped.
Russia’s Defense Ministry denied launching any missiles at the city. Instead, it claimed the explosion was caused by the accidental detonation of Ukrainian ammunition stored at a nearby shopping center. Moscow further alleged that reports of the Kharkiv strike were a distraction from a New Year’s Eve drone attack in the Russian-occupied Kherson region, which it claimed killed 27 people. Ukraine has denied targeting civilians in that incident.
The escalation comes as Ukraine hosts security talks in Kyiv today. Representatives from 15 countries, NATO, and the European Union are meeting to discuss security guarantees. This gathering serves as a precursor to a "Coalition of the Willing" summit scheduled for January 6 in France, where leaders aim to finalize long-term military and financial support for Ukraine.
