Authorities opened 16 sluice gates of the Kaptai Dam on Saturday morning to manage rising water levels caused by continuous rainfall and upstream hilly runoff.
At 11:20 AM, the Kaptai Hydropower Plant authorities began releasing a total of 9,000 cusecs of water, lifting each gate by 6 inches. Senior administrative officials, Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Nazma Ashrafi and Hydropower Plant Manager Mahmud Hasan monitored the opening.
Manager Mahmud Hasan stated that the water release is a precautionary measure to ensure the structural safety of the dam. On Saturday lake's water level reached 104.8 feet Mean Sea Level (MSL) approaching its maximum capacity of 109 feet and the danger level of 108 feet. Officials urged the public to remain alert but emphasized there is no need to panic as they are constantly monitoring the situation.
Concurrently, the increased water volume has boosted power generation at the facility. The plant’s five active units are currently generating over 200 megawatts of electricity.
