Spain’s journey to their second-ever World Cup final has been five years in the making according to captain Rodri. Building on victories in the 2023 Nations League and Euro 2024 La Roja now faces their ultimate test: a Sunday showdown against defending champion Argentina at MetLife Stadium.
"We've been gradually growing," said Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner. Urging his teammates to play without fear, he emphasized Spain's tactical versatility. "We can adapt to defending or counter-attacking. We are a very complete team."
Spain's path to the final has been dominant. Since an opening draw against Cape Verde, they have outscored opponents 13-1 conceding only one goal in seven matches. Their run includes a decisive 2-0 semifinal victory over France bolstered by crucial late goals from Mikel Merino and stellar goalkeeping by Unai Simón.
Ahead of the final concerns lingered over 19-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal who was spotted with a wrapped thigh after the France match. However, head coach Luis de la Fuente quickly dismissed injury fears. "He is in optimal condition," the coach assured.
Addressing the inevitable comparisons between Yamal and Argentine legend Lionel Messi, de la Fuente urged caution. "Messi is a once-in-history player. Lamine has to be himself. The best way we can support him is by helping him be the person we know today."
While remaining completely unfazed by the pressure of the upcoming final Spanish coach jokingly admitted his only anxiety was the helicopter commute between New York and New Jersey. "About everything else, I'm calm" he smiled. "We just want to enjoy this amazing moment."
