A truck driver was killed and his teenage helper critically injured when an aging iron bridge collapsed under the weight of their sand-loaded truck, plunging the vehicle into the Betua canal in Lalmohan Upazila.
The collapse has severed direct communication for thousands of residents across two neighboring villages.
The incident occurred around 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23. The bridge connected Char Umed village (Ward 8, Ramaganj Union) to Char Molladi village (Ward 6, Dhaligournagar Union).
The deceased driver, Md. Naeem, was the son of Md. Farid from Dhaligournagar. The injured helper, 14-year-old Alamin, is the son of a local resident named Bhutto.
According to local sources, the truck was transporting sand toward Char Molladi when the old bridge gave way beneath it. Nearby residents rescued the trapped victims and rushed them to the Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex.
The on-duty doctor declared Naeem dead upon arrival. Alamin was immediately transferred to the 250-bed Bhola General Hospital for advanced care due to the severity of his injuries.
Sub-Inspector Nur Amin of the Lalmohan Police Station confirmed the casualty and stated that an official investigation into the incident is currently underway.
