In a crucial battle for World Cup survival, Algeria staged a thrilling second-half comeback to defeat Jordan 2-1. This marks Algeria's first victory on the World Cup stage since 2014, ending a 12-year drought.
Both teams entered the match needing a win after losing their opening fixtures. Jordan took control early, making history in the 36th minute when Nizar Al-Rashdan fired a powerful shot into the bottom corner. The goal gave Jordan their first-ever lead in a World Cup tournament, taking them into the halftime break up 1-0.
Algeria had their chances in the first half, most notably when Riyad Mahrez found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. However, Jordan's Yazeed Abulaila made a crucial save to temporarily preserve the lead.
The momentum shifted after the break. Substitute Nadhir Benbouali equalized in the 69th minute, powerfully heading in a corner kick from Mahrez. The relentless pressure from the North African side paid off again in the 82nd minute when Amine Gouiri reacted quickly in a crowded box to prod home the game-winning goal.
Algeria held onto the 2-1 lead until the final whistle, keeping their knockout stage hopes alive. If they win their final group match against Austria, they will secure a spot in the Round of 32. Meanwhile, the defeat confirms Jordan's elimination from the tournament.
