Modern life from endless typing on laptops to scrolling on smartphones is placing immense strain on our wrists. What often begins as a dull ache can rapidly progress to severe joint pain also increasing the risk of debilitating arthritis in later life.

The wrist is not a single joint but a complex, fragile network of small bones, ligaments and tendons. When this finely tuned balance is disrupted by previous injuries, ageing or repetitive stress, conditions like osteoarthritis can develop. Medical experts even describe the wrist as a "sentinel joint," noting that grip strength is a strong indicator of overall physical and cognitive health. People who maintain strong wrists into older age are less vulnerable to falls and are more likely to retain their independence.

To protect your wrist health the orthopaedic surgeons recommend starting with a calcium-rich diet incorporating dairy or small, bony fish to strengthen bones. Maintaining a healthy weight also improves joint biomechanics.

However, the best preventative measure is a consistent exercise routine. Experts suggest performing the following four simple exercises three to four times a week (doing three sets of 10 repetitions for each):

1. Strengthen Your Shoulders:

Your arm muscles work as a chain the weak shoulders place heavier loads on your wrists. Stand with your arms out to your sides. Slowly raise them toward the ceiling then lower them back down.

2. Improve Grip Strength:

Squeeze a hand therapy ball or a tennis ball as hard as you can for 5 to 10 seconds. Relax for five seconds, then repeat. This conditions the forearm muscles that stabilize the wrist.

3. Flex and Extend:

Rest your forearm on a table with your hand hanging off the edge with holding a light weight (3–7kg). With your palm facing up and curl the wrist toward you then lower it. Repeat the motion with your palm facing down.

4. Rotate Your Wrists:

Constant typing keeps our hands in fixed positions. To counter this, rest your arm on a table with your hand over the edge, thumb pointing up. Slowly rotate your wrist so the palm faces down then rotate it back until the palm faces up.

Strong the flexible wrists are easy to take for granted until they fail. By integrating these simple habits today also we can protect our mobility for years to come.
