A high-level government delegation inspected potential sites for a proposed government medical college in Lakshmipur on Wednesday. The initiative has sparked hope among residents, who are urging the government to expedite the process and launch student admissions by the next academic year.
Dr. Misbah Uddin, Director General (Additional Duty) of the Directorate General of Medical Education, led the inspection. The team visited a proposed 20-acre site in the Abirakhil area of Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila and evaluated the infrastructure, hospital capacity, and service quality of Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital.
Discussions during the visit focused on land acquisition, geographical suitability, regional connectivity, and the logistical requirements for conducting academic medical programs.
The delegation was accompanied by Zakir Hossain, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare; Dr. Hasan Shahin, Lakshmipur Civil Surgeon; Dr. Iqbal Mahmud, Assistant Professor; Samrat Khisa, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General); Mathew Marma, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO); and Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) Vice President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury, among others.
Residents of the district have long campaigned for a local medical college. Welcoming the inspection, civic leaders emphasized the need for swift administrative action. Establishing the facility would significantly improve healthcare access and provide vital medical education opportunities for students in Lakshmipur and the greater Noakhali region.
According to relevant sources, the delegation will submit an inspection report and recommendations to the Ministry of Health. Further steps toward establishing the college will depend on the government’s final approval of that report.
