A brief spell of evening rain and gusty winds swept through the capital on Wednesday, bringing a welcome chill as the Bengali month of Baishakh nears its end.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reported that wind speeds in Dhaka ranged between 20 and 30 km/h. Meteorologists have ruled out the possibility of a severe Nor’wester—typically characterized by winds exceeding 90 km/h—for the capital.
"There is no chance of a severe storm in Dhaka today; only intermittent rain is expected," said meteorologist Afroza Sultana. She added that weather conditions in the capital are likely to remain stable with limited rainfall over the next four to five days.
Temperatures are expected to hover between 34°C and 35°C, with officials indicating a low probability of a heatwave in the coming week. On Wednesday, Jashore recorded the country’s highest temperature at 35.2°C, while Dhaka reached 33.5°C.
While the capital remains relatively calm, the Met Office has issued a warning for inland river ports. Gusty or squally winds of 45–60 km/h, accompanied by thunderstorms, are predicted for several regions, including Rajshahi, Dhaka, Sylhet, and Chattogram. River ports in these areas have been advised to hoist Cautionary Signal No. 1.
Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir explained that warnings are essential for river vessels as open water conditions can cause wind speeds to intensify rapidly.
The BMD's five-day forecast suggests light to moderate rain and lightning may persist in parts of Mymensingh and Sylhet, with isolated showers expected across other divisions. Both day and night temperatures are likely to see a slight decline during this period.
