Police recovered the body of a young woman from a sack in the Baimail area of Konabari, Gazipur, late Sunday night. The victim’s husband is suspected of the murder and remains at large.
The deceased has been identified as Momtaz Akhter, 23, a local garment factory worker. She was the wife of Anwar Hossain, originally from Jamalpur. The couple resided in a rented room at Mokshed Mia’s house in Baimail.
According to police and local sources, the incident occurred around midnight on May 3. Anwar allegedly strangled Momtaz to death before stuffing her body into a white sack. He was spotted carrying the bag toward the Dhaka-Tangail highway, reportedly attempting to dispose of it.
Locals became suspicious of Anwar’s movements and intercepted him. When questioned about the contents of the bag, Anwar abandoned it and fled the scene. Upon opening the sack, residents discovered the body and immediately alerted the authorities.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Konabari Police Station, Md. Iftekhar Hossain, stated that preliminary evidence suggests death by strangulation. "We have recovered the body and sent it for autopsy. While the husband has fled, we have launched a drive to apprehend him. Legal proceedings are currently underway," the OC added.
