The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has scrapped the plan to build a multi-storey residential complex within the Jhilmil project in Keraniganj. With this decision, the Capital Development Authority’s (RAJUK) ambitious high-rise housing initiative is officially cancelled.
The approval for cancellation came Tuesday during a committee meeting chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.
Initially designed as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), the project spanned 381 acres in Keraniganj, specifically targeting middle-income families. The master plan featured Capacity Approximately 14,000 to 15,000 apartments. Structure Multi-storey buildings reaching up to 25 floors. Flat Sizes Units ranging from 1,050 to 1,250 square feet.
Beyond housing, the project was intended to be a self-sustained township including lakes, parks, playgrounds, and jogging tracks. Essential infrastructure such as schools, colleges, hospitals, mosques, and commercial zones were also part of the original layout.
RAJUK sources noted that based on 2019 estimates, the price per square foot was fixed between Tk 4,600 and Tk 5,100. The cancellation marks a significant shift in RAJUK’s urban housing strategy for the Keraniganj area.
