Authorities have ordered the closure of the surgical department at Nageshwari Central Clinic in Kurigram after a patient died following a cesarean section. The clinic was also forced to pay 6 lakh in compensation to the deceased's family.
The patient, Mishti Khatun (22), wife of Alamgir Hossain from Berubari Union, underwent the procedure 22 days ago, performed by Dr. Amjad Hossain. Her family alleged that her condition deteriorated due to medical negligence, specifically claiming that internal stitches were improperly handled. After being moved to Rangpur Prime Medical College Hospital for advanced care, she passed away on Saturday afternoon.
The death sparked outrage, leading relatives to protest and vandalize the clinic exterior on Sunday morning. A settlement was subsequently reached on Sunday afternoon in a meeting attended by local political figures, including representatives from the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.
Berubari UP Chairman Solaiman Ali confirmed the 6 lakh settlement, noting that the family opted for a financial resolution to avoid the perceived "harassment" of a lengthy legal battle.
While the clinic director, Akher Ali, denied any surgical defects, he confirmed that all surgical operations have been suspended effective immediately. The diagnostic wing of the facility remains operational.
