The government has decided to withdraw the monthly meter charge for prepaid electricity meters, addressing long-standing consumer complaints.

Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku confirmed the decision while speaking to reporters on Sunday (March 29). He said the change will be implemented soon.

“For a long time, consumers have expressed dissatisfaction over the monthly meter charge. We have closely reviewed the issue. To ensure a more customer-friendly electricity service, we have decided to remove this charge entirely,” the minister said.

Currently, prepaid meter users pay a fixed monthly fee as meter rent. Many consumers have questioned why this charge continues even after paying the full cost of the meter.

Civic groups and online campaigns have repeatedly called for the removal of this fee. The government’s decision is expected to reduce monthly electricity expenses for consumers.
