Sewing machines were distributed to marginalized women in Phulbari of Dinajpur to mark International Women's Day.
The distribution programme was held on Sunday afternoon at the temporary office of the NGO BASIC in the upazila. The initiative was organized by BASIC in collaboration with the Bangladesh NGO Foundation.
A total of 10 marginalized women received sewing machines after completing three months of training. The machines were provided free of cost to help them start small tailoring work and become financially self-reliant.
The programme was presided over by Ram Roy, while BASIC Executive Director Shyamal Chandra Sarkar moderated the event. Upazila Women’s Affairs Officer Rita Mondal attended the programme as the chief guest.
Among the special guests were Aladipur Union Parishad member Sirajul Islam, Phulbari Adivasi Unnayan Samity President Chunnu Tudu, Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh Phulbari Area Manager of the ‘Saman Awaaz’ project Khadija Akhter, and Caritas Bangladesh Area Manager Tojjammel Haque.
According to the organizers, the beneficiaries are women from Aladipur and Betdighi unions. The support aims to help them earn an income through tailoring and improve their livelihoods.
