The Lakshmipur district unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has demanded the establishment of a railway line connecting Lakshmipur with Dhaka and Chattogram, emphasizing its importance for regional development. The demand was made at a press conference held at the Lakshmipur Press Club on Sunday afternoon.
Presiding over the event, SUM Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan, district Ameer of Jamaat, said that the first field survey for a railway line from Chaumuhani to Lakshmipur was conducted in 1973, when several potential station sites were identified. Later, on August 7, 2014, a formal proposal was submitted to the Ministry of Railways on behalf of Lakshmipur residents. The then rail minister instructed the Chattogram Eastern Railway authority to take necessary steps, but no progress has been made since, he added.
Addressing the conference, Dr. Muhammad Rezaul Karim, Secretary of Dhaka North City Jamaat, said, “A railway connection would boost the regional economy, facilitate agricultural transport, and open new opportunities in industry, education, and healthcare. Since an economic zone is planned here, we strongly urge the government to establish the railway line to build a prosperous Lakshmipur.”
Other attendees included AR Hafiz Ullah, District Secretary; Nasir Uddin Mahmud, Assistant Secretary; Momin Ullah Patowary, District President of the Workers Welfare Federation; Abul Farah Nishan, Ameer of Lakshmipur City Jamaat; and Rezaul Islam Khan Suman, Secretary of Chandraganj Thana Jamaat.
