A businessman was killed in Kaliganj, Gazipur, on Saturday while attempting to save one of his employees from being assaulted. Police have arrested three members of the same family in connection with the incident.
The deceased, Liton Chandra Ghosh (55), also known as Kali, was the owner of 'Baishakhi Sweetmeat and Hotel' located near the Kaliganj municipality on Baranagar Road.
The confrontation began around 11:00 am when a customer, Masum Mia (28), entered the shop and engaged in a heated argument with a young employee, Ananta Das (17), over a trivial matter. The dispute quickly escalated into a physical altercation.
Witnesses stated that Masum's parents, Mohammad Swapan Mia (55) and Majeda Khatun (45), soon joined the fight. When Liton Ghosh intervened to de-escalate the situation and protect his staff, he was brutally attacked. According to eyewitnesses, Liton was struck on the head with a shovel and died on the spot.
Local residents detained the three suspects—Swapan Mia, Majeda Khatun, and Masum Mia—and handed them over to the authorities.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Zakir Hossain confirmed that the three individuals are in police custody. "We are in the process of taking formal legal action against the accused," he stated. The incident has sparked significant outrage and grief among the local business community.
